Chappy's Chat

15/09/2016
Over the past couple of days I've watched the Rio Paralympics ad called 'We're the Superhumans' quite a few times. It's great! I've even walked into a couple of classrooms and seen teachers showing their students. The ad begins with a drummer playing the drums with his feet and then showcases a number of the athletes who are currently competing in the Rio Paralympic Games.
If you haven't seen the ad, check it out on YouTube:
I think the thing that stands out to me the most as I watch the ad is not the disability of each of the performers or athletes but their amazing ability. Each of them is profoundly talented and has worked really hard to achieve the amazing things which they can do.
I often find that in my own thinking, and I see it in students (and teachers) sometimes too, where we tend to focus on what we can't do. In our thoughts or attitudes we might say, that's too hard or I can't do that. Even worse, we might even start thinking things like I wish I was like them. Wishing we were someone else or focusing on what we can't currently do leads down a troublesome road.
And it's true, there are some things that we can't do. I will never play basketball at an elite level and I will certainly never be a world class singer. There is a necessity for us to face the facts, but if we maintain a negative attitude by simply focussing on what we can't do, we'll fail to see what we can do. Or even even worse, miss out on trying the stuff that we can't do yet.
I love it when I hear students say I can't do it yet. It means there is hope and a willingness to work hard and keep trying. They're willing to have a go, ask for feedback or help. I love it! When I hear those words around Lawnton it tells me we're in a good place. So let's keep focussing on what we can do and especially those things we can't do yet!
I hope you all have a safe and happy Spring Holiday! If you're looking for something for your Year 3-6's to do, I'm running a holiday program next week from Wednesday to Friday. It runs from 9:00am - 3:00pm each day and only costs $10/day. There's a few places left so jump online and register this week!
Happy holidays!
