What's been happening in 3/4P?

15/09/2016
Term 3 has seen 3/4P tackling some big environmental issues!  We completed a rubbish audit of our school eating areas.  Students donned plastic gloves and were instructed to tip out the contents of rubbish bins to get to the bottom of what Lawnton students throw out.  Overwhelmingly we found that ‘poppers’ (juice or milk containers) were the largest and most common recyclable item being dumped in the general refuse bin. We hope to implement a small recycling program next term that will see students placing their empty poppers in a container which will be emptied and recycled by our class.
In addition, students in 3/4P have been applying their learning in science to identify and (hopefully) solve erosion that is occurring right outside our front door!  The area between the resource centre and C Block (our block) is used as a major walkway however without a concrete footpath the ground has become a dusty eroded slope.  We have concluded that numerous approaches will be necessary to solve the problem.  A concrete footpath will keep hundreds of feet from disrupting the ground and vegetation including grass will be needed to keep the topsoil in place during wet weather.  I will take the students' concerns and solutions to our next Management Meeting and hope to come back to class with good news.  If you or anyone you know can assist with this project in any way please contact me via email (rxlog2@eq.edu.au).  Have a safe and relaxing break!
